About Us
The Nippon Film Society provides another meaningful way to connect with the Japanese learning community on campus. Each week, we screen a different Japanese film with English subtitles, making the event accessible to all levels of Japanese comprehension.
This club brings together a wide variety of people, from Japanese students and students with Japanese heritage to Japanese language learning students and students with an interest in Japanese culture.
We screen films on weekend evenings, giving the event a casual atmosphere and often provide snacks from the local Asian market to enjoy while watching. Additionally, we play the movie during Late-Night hours so people are able to bring back some food from Blanch.
Members can vote on which movie to watch each week, and over the course of the year, we enjoy a vast array of films from Studio Ghibli classics like My Neighbor Totoro to newer releases such as Shoplifters and The Snow White Murder Case. Watching movies is a great way for language learners to reinforce their listening skills in a fun, relaxing way. Anybody is welcome to come to these events, and it can also be a good entryway for people who are interested in learning more about Japanese culture or a way for Japanese heritage students to connect with their culture.
This club is an excellent opportunity to make connections with others in the community and get to know language assistants and higher-level students on a more personal level.
